TRENDnet 300Mbps Wireless N Access Point TEW-638APB (Black)

I have a small business and I had to move the printer to a common place linked to all computers running Windows 7, Vista, Vista 64 and XP. I used Trendnet TEW-638APB H/W:V2 in bridge mode along with printer server (Dlink- DP-301U). Configuration of TEW took 10 minutes. It has been working great without any problems for the past month.

I’ve owned and set up numerous wireless devices. The TRENDnet TEW-638APB is one of the most disappointing wireless devices that I’ve ever purchased.

The configuration process isn’t ideal. You MUST run their software in order to configure the device. Now for those advanced users, take heart. The software doesn’t actually install anything on your computer. It’s just required to make the initial connection to the device. After getting it configured, I have had nothing but trouble with it. I continually needs to be rebooted. It stops responding at least every other day. After rebooting the device, it will work perfectly for a day or two, then it locks up again. To make matters worse, when it locks up, it takes my router down. My router is rock solid and has never crashed in the two years that I’ve owned it. Just to double check it, I tried another router and had the exact same results. So not only does my extended wireless continually crash, now the entire network goes down every couple days. This makes buying/using the TEW-638APB unacceptable!

I’ve generally been happy with TRENDnet products, but this one just isn’t up to their usual standard. I’m hoping for a firmware update, but until they get beyond firmware version 1.1.8, I’d recommend staying away from the TEW-638APB. Good luck!

It does what it claims very well, and the price is cheap. Configuration was easy, only because I have knowledge in this area. The literature for most of these products from abroad fall short of being understandable.

TRENDnet needs to improve their literature. Brands like Linksys and D-Link have much better literature. However for the tech-savy person this is a chance to get a good product at an excellent price.

I rated it 4 stars based on the documentation. Keep in mind that unless you buy Linksys or D-Link this below par documentation is typical.

I wish the enclosure was a nice metal one like TRENDnet used on their nice BRF114 router (see my other reviews).

Lastly, I have owned this product for a while and it is still working very well. The unit runs very cool, and has Excellent coverage and signal strength.

These are fairly easy to set up. Have only used them in bridge mode with a Trendnet router (but should work just as reliably with any make). I have just ordered my 3rd one for a new spot. They all work great and have been “Set And Forget” type products.

Had problems with this that extends beyond hours, more like days. The setting up is a hassle. Initially wanted to use this to bridge(Ap Mode)wirelessly from my Dlink615 wireless N. It was horrible. I come to the assumption that the two are incompatible. Had to use wire to connect the two, and now using it as an access point rather than the client I purchase it to use as. In addition, this thing freaks out every two days or less. Have to keep resetting or recycling the power. Have upgrade the firmware from the 1.8 to a 1.10, hope this solve the problem, I am still watching it after 1 day.
